Sampling Methodologies

Benthic Macroinvertebrate monitoring is accomplished in accordance with the "Sampling Protocols for the Rapid Bioassessment of Streams and Lakes Using Benthic Macroinvertebrates" outlined by the Ministry of the Environment. The protocol prescribes a "timed kick and sweep" method to collect the invertebrates which is essentially a suspension of streambed sediments by kicking them across the channel and the capture of the suspended material (and biota within them) using a mesh sampler. The samples are later identified at the laboratory.
