Tree & Shrub Planting Project Guidelines

Funding and Technical Support Is Available

Cost-share Rate: 50%

Maximum Payment: $6,000


Purpose:

To reduce soil erosion by retiring marginal or fragile agricultural lands, creating vegetative buffers along watercourses, or installing windbreaks.

    Eligible Projects

  • Reforestation of floodplains, marginal or fragile croplands, or groundwater recharge areas

  • Planting buffer strips along watercourses, wetlands, or other water bodies

  • Installing tree windbreaks to prevent wind erosion.

    General Comments

  • LSRCA forestry services are available for consultation, planting plan preparation, and the supply and planting of trees and shrubs.

  • If LSRCA services are not utilized, it is recommended that a private consultant with RPF (Registered Professional Forester) designation be retained.

  • If LSRCA services are not utilized, any approved funding will not be paid out until October of the year of tree establishment to ensure adequate survival.

  • The participant is responsible for the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs.

  • The use of tree shelters can improve results.

  • Livestock must be excluded from the site (see Section 1.4).

  • Applicants may be required to sign a 15 year agreement.

  • All plant material is native and of local origin: see Seedling Species Available. and Hardwood Tree Species Available and Wildlife Shrub Species Available.

  • Planting costs may be reduced if on a "priority planting area."

    Eligible Costs

  • Site assessment and planting plan design

  • Trees, shrubs and planting costs

  • Establishment of cover crops on tilled land (in conjunction with tree planting).

    Ineligible Costs

  • Commercial stock, fruit trees or trees established for Christmas tree production

  • Large stock (seedlings and bare root stock is preferred)

  • machinery or equipment used by the applicant, family dependents or the applicant's business

  • Taxes
