Decommissioning An Unused Well Guidelines

Funding and Technical Support Is Available

Cost-share Rate: 100%

Maximum Payment: $1,500


Purpose:

To prevent groundwater contamination via improperly abandoned or unused wells by encouraging proper decommissioning.

    Eligible Projects

  • Proper plugging of unused wells (dug, bored or drilled) by a licensed well contractor.

    Project Details

  • Must comply with the MOE procedures for plugging or abandoning an unused water well in accordance to Ontario Regulation 903.

  • Details of the procedure must be documented on water well record and a copy submitted upon completion to the LSRCA.

  • A copy of the well contractor's and/or well technician's license must be provided to the LSRCA.

    Eligible Costs

  • Licensed contractor fees

  • Any labour or materials associated with well plugging procedures

    Ineligible Costs

  • Well pumps and water purification or treatment systems

  • Drilling of new wells

  • Permits

  • Taxes
