Decommissioning An Unused Well Guidelines

Cost-share Rate: 100%
Maximum Payment: $1,500
Purpose:
To prevent groundwater contamination via improperly abandoned or unused wells by encouraging proper decommissioning.
Eligible Projects
- Proper plugging of unused wells (dug, bored or drilled) by a licensed well contractor.
Project Details
- Must comply with the MOE procedures for plugging or abandoning an unused water well in accordance to Ontario Regulation 903.
- Details of the procedure must be documented on water well record and a copy submitted upon completion to the LSRCA.
- A copy of the well contractor's and/or well technician's license must be provided to the LSRCA.
Eligible Costs
- Licensed contractor fees
- Any labour or materials associated with well plugging procedures
Ineligible Costs
- Well pumps and water purification or treatment systems
- Drilling of new wells
- Permits
- Taxes
