Soils

Soil development is a function of several factors including time, the type of parent material available, topography, vegetation and long term climatic conditions.  As a result of the diversity in these factors across the area, a broad range of soil types occur within the Lake Simcoe drainage basin.  Loam, sand, clay, gravel, clay loam, sandy loam, loamy sand, silty loam, marsh/muck, fine sandy loam and silty clay loam are all reported soil types in the Lake Simcoe Watershed in the relative quantities described in the figure below (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food).
